Identification documents

What is considered valid identification when crossing a border depends on the traveller's nationality and destination country. The identification must match the name stated on the ticket. This applies to both domestic and international travel. If the traveller is unsure about the entry requirements, they must contact the relevant authorities in the destination country.

In addition to a valid travel document, all travellers must carry valid physical identification. Fjord Line reserves the right to deny boarding to travellers who cannot present a valid travel document or sufficient identification documents. In such cases, the journey will be regarded as a no-show and the ticket price will not be refunded.

Please note that the authorities have introduced ID checks for entry into Norway.

The following requirements apply:

Nordic citizens:

Passengers who are citizens of a Nordic country may identify themselves with a passport, national ID card, physical driving licence (this does not include a digital driving licence in an app or a temporary driving permit), or a bank card with a photo. Children travelling without their parents must carry their own passport*.

EU/EEA and Schengen citizens:

Passengers from the EU/EEA or a Schengen country must bring a national ID card or passport. This also applies to children under the age of 18 travelling with a parent*.

Citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA and Schengen area:

Passengers from countries outside the EU/EEA, the Schengen Area or the Nordic countries who are eligible for visa-free travel must carry a passport. Passengers from countries outside the EU/EEA, the Schengen Area or the Nordic countries who require a visa must carry both a passport and a visa (or residence permit). This also applies to children under the age of 18 travelling with a parent.

Please note: An asylum seeker certificate is not considered valid identification for border crossing purposes. This also applies to children under the age of 18 travelling with a parent*.

Children:

All Nordic children travelling without at least one parent, as well as all children with non-Nordic nationality (even when travelling with one of their parents), must carry their own travel and identification documents, including any required visas or residence permits. Children travelling with a guardian must carry a letter of authorization signed by at least one parent/legal guardian. The authorization form can be found at www.fjordline.com.
